An alabama-raised video strategist, content creator, educator, podcaster, and introvert who plays an extrovert on camera. And I’m doing it all from my laundry room!
This one goes out to everyone who relies on trends to grow their account- stop.
In case this is your first time tuning in, let me introduce myself. Reporting from my laundry office in small-town Illinois, this is Virginia Kerr. And I’m here to help you stand out and make money by leveraging and up-leveling your social media videos. I’ve been in the TV and video industry for more than 20 years. Four TV newsrooms, hundreds of videos, blogs, and podcasts later, I’m here to share what I’ve learned with women ready to get the most out of their hard work.
Does video intimidate you? Make you want to hide? I’m excited to help you push through your limiting beliefs and show you that you can shine on video! I’m closing the gap by teaching you easy systems and sharing templates that help your videos get in front of your ideal clients.
Welcome to This is Virginia Kerr, The Podcast! Let’s get started!
How much have you actually grown in the last 3 months? Be honest. Turns out if you are a chronic trend user, you could be hurting your own account outreach. This is because of the inherent nature of trends- they’re popular with lots of people doing them. Hence, it’s really easy for your video to get lost, especially if the trend you’re utilizing is older. That’s why it’s actually better to focus on growth attained through less “trendy” means.
I know lots of big accounts that don’t rely on trends, really at all, and I’d say those accounts are stronger for this lack. Let’s talk about the hazards of trends, and why avoiding them might just be the best strategy out there for you.
Trends don’t allow you or your personal expertise to shine through nor do they let you connect with your audience. They don’t allow you to stand out and apart as a leader in your industry, nor do they allow you to tap into the power of storytelling. Instead of text bursts accompanied by a hideous yet trendy tune, why not instead get a little vulnerable and tell a story that shows you know your audience enough to connect with them over a universal feeling or experience. That goes so much further than weird hand motions to an equally weird song.
Listen, unless you’re Beyonce, trends really won’t help you all that much, and as mentioned above they may actually hurt you. Aside from making it easy for you to get lost in the crowd, they also don’t challenge your camera techniques or on-screen presence. They don’t help you evolve and improve your long-form content; in other words, they don’t help you grow as a content producer or an expert in your field.
Trends can be a great way to introduce yourself or shake things up every once in a while. They can also be great if you’re having a hard time and need to put something out but don’t have it in you to make something more complex with actual meaning. These moments are few and far between and the majority of your content needs to be focused on growth and connection through what makes you different, and what makes you special.
