An alabama-raised video strategist, content creator, educator, podcaster, and introvert who plays an extrovert on camera. And I’m doing it all from my laundry room!
There it goes.
As you watch the S.S. Video sail off into the ocean of opportunity and connection, you wonder how you could have let yourself miss the boat.
In case this is your first time tuning in, let me introduce myself. Reporting from my laundry office in small-town Illinois, this is Virginia Kerr. And I’m here to help you stand out and make money by leveraging and up-leveling your social media videos. I’ve been in the TV and video industry for more than 20 years. Four TV newsrooms, hundreds of videos, blogs, and podcasts later, I’m here to share what I’ve learned with women ready to get the most out of their hard work.
Does video intimidate you? Make you want to hide? I’m excited to help you push through your limiting beliefs and show you that you can shine on video! I’m closing the gap by teaching you easy systems and sharing templates that help your videos get in front of your ideal clients.
Welcome to This is Virginia Kerr, The Podcast! Let’s get started!
Oh, video content making. It’s like being the new kid in high school all over again except instead of friend groups, everyone has their content niches on lock. How are you supposed to go against cat Roomba riders and win?
Anything you would say has already been said by someone with a million followers right? Most shows and movies are reboots, nothing is new, everything is dust, if you need me I’ll be throwing my phone in a pond on my way to join an Amish community, because what’s the point?
Of course, you think everyone is already making videos…because you’re watching peoples’ videos all day. Here’s the thing though—NOT everyone is making videos. And no one is making videos quite like you.
Your experiences color how you view and interpret the world, and will inform your content. It’s that personal touch that will make your videos compelling to people who relate to you as a person.
For example, I wouldn’t want to learn cooking from Martha Stewart because she frightens me, but Ina Garten seems lovely and I want to bake pies with her. But I’m sure there are people out there who would adore kitchen time with Martha. It takes all kinds to connect with all kinds.
Ironically I feel like this one should go without saying, but I would hope that you believe in the videos you are making. They don’t have to be elaborate or complicated; some of the best videos I’ve seen are just people passionately relaying valuable information they clearly care to share.
You also need to get rid of the obsession with a huge following, especially instantly. Slow and steady growth is much more consistent and manageable, and you don’t need millions of adoring fans to make money. Again, as long as what you’re putting out there is genuine and well-informed, you’ll attract like-minded people who share your “vibe”, as the kids say.
Just remember that you got into this to help people. The good you’re doing should be an inspiration for you to keep trying every day. Video is just another tool in your arsenal to get your message out there and help transform lives, but only if you use it.
Instead of putting pressure on yourself to do all the things, learn one thing at a time. I learned TikTok and because I had that foundation to build on, I wasn’t scrambling to also learn Reels when that function came up on Instagram. There will always be some new technology out there that becomes popular so just go with it, and let everything organically inform your process on other platforms.
If you do them consistently and are genuine in your messages, videos will convert viewers into purchasers. And this is why, as I said before, the number of your followers doesn’t matter. What does matter is the quality of the connection you have with them. I had a client who had less than 600 clients on Instagram, but because she had quality video content and a strategy to back that up, she had a 5 figure month. You don’t need all the pie, you just need your slice of it.
Remember that even if someone does what you do they’re not for everyone just as you aren’t for everyone. What’s that saying? “You could be the juiciest, sweetest peach in the world, but that doesn’t matter to someone who just hates peaches.”
And that’s ok because there are plenty of people who love peaches. Imagine if therapists or doctors didn’t go into medicine because they thought there were enough medical professionals were in the world. Certain patients connect with certain doctors because we all have different emotional needs for connection. None of this is better or worse or commentary on any of us as people but…well…you see what I’m saying.
And the strongest medium to connect, to foster relationships, and to reinforce your message is video. So use it. You’re not too late.
